I have always believed that anything I take on, I can accomplish, as long as I am dedicated and work hard.
Last week, my husband and I pulled our 39 foot steel boat out of the water to prepare it for a yearlong voyage from Canada to the Caribbean. Salt water is tough on steel, so we decided to sand and paint the bottom. I began the process full of vigour and enthusiasm. A few days of sanding and painting and it would be back in the water. I will tell you, sanding epoxy off a steel hull is hard work and takes a lot of muscle.
A week and a half later, I have come to a realization. As much enthusiasm, energy and grit as I may put into something, I am not able to always keep up. In this case, my smaller size and limited muscle power equated to me taking three times as long as my husband to do the same thing, and with less effective results.
It made me think; sometimes when you want a job done right, you have to get someone else to do it. Not that you can’t get it done, but one sign of great strength is to be able to admit that you have weaknesses. And for some jobs there is someone out there that could possibly do the job faster, easier, and better than you.
In business, especially as an entrepreneur, it is important to be able to recognize when you need to outsource. I am sure business owners feel responsible and want to keep control of their business. But sometimes the time and energy spent on tasks or projects outside your strengths can cost you more in the end than if you just hire out.
The Kolbe A Index is a great place to start to find out your conative strengths; your natural instincts that define your most productive way of doing things. It allows you to define under what circumstances you excel, and what areas may be more challenging for you. Knowing your weaknesses can help you build a team around you that compliments you.
Don’t be afraid to reach out and make use of others talents for those things you aren’t so go good at. It doesn’t mean failure, a shot to your pride; that you can’t do it. It just means you are focused on making the outcomes of your business the best they can be.
If you want to get it done, sometimes you have to let go.
