Cohorts, Accountants and My Need for Creative Destruction

Cohorts Creative Destruction
Explosion of color

By Mike Bossy

I was reading a book on demographics, trying to get a better understanding of the different cohorts. Typical of me, I went down a rabbit hole and discovered two things. Cohort can be a noun or a verb. I guess I should have paid better attention in English class.

When I searched the definition of cohort, I found out it is used in many ways. Then I remembered a blog written by Seth Godin entitled “The Four Cohorts of the Status Quo”. The four cohorts are 1. Caring about policy; 2. Caring about stability; 3. Caring about not much; and 4. Being harmed by the other three groups.

In the world of accountants, the first three groups are always present. Godin’s advice to the fourth group (which I think includes me) is that to get change to happen, my group must create conditions for group three to care. Then it can move up the agenda.

I was always on the path of creative destruction. A path where new methods replace old methods. It’s the path mankind must be on, not just accountants.

One final thought as I think through this bit of rambling. Someone must make it up. Someone must make it real. Someone must make it repeat. I think I may have heard this at Strategic Coach.
