Fireflies in the Forest

I am in Burk’s Falls tonight and the temperature is -15 degrees Celsius. I have been here when it was much colder but tonight, for some reason, I am thinking about warm nights and fireflies.

I don’t know what it is about fireflies, but they always remind me that there is so much to learn and so much to experience. They have other names like lightning bugs or glowworms. Most fireflies flying around on warm nights are males looking to mate. There are a whole host of facts to learn about fireflies but you might ask why I care. I don’t know.

What I do know is that learning about something new today gets me just as excited as when I was a kid. The firefly reminds me of this. If we constantly learn, we will not get sucked into a world of sameness.

Retirement can be one such sameness. When you retire, you may relinquish all that made you who you were. You relinquish so you fit the norm. Why be like everyone else? If you enjoy what you do and are creating value for others, don’t stop.
