Jealousy, Envy and Unique Ability

By Mike Bossy

On vacation, I always try to read things that are little bit lighter. Right now, I am reading Picard the Dark Veil. One paragraph sparked thoughts related to jealousy and envy. What is the difference, and have I felt either in the past? I did a little digging.

Jealousy is a feeling of resentment, bitterness, or hostility toward someone who has something that you don’t.

Envy is a negative feeling of desire centered on someone who has something that you do not.

I must admit, I never felt any resentment or bitterness, but I have had negative feelings around someone who has something I do not have. Envy. Here are two thoughts to combat this.

First, do you want to swap places with the person? If you could, is it a wholesale swap? Not likely.

Second, in the Dark Veil, Thaddeaus’ grandmother Lwaxana Troy talks about every person having a “Unique Ability” and offers this advice. “The luckiest of us, little one, are those who figure it out early”

Finding your Unique Ability is the best way to combat envy and jealousy. It’s never too late to find yours.
