Taylor Swift, Mindset and Choice

By Mike Bossy

I was in Vancouver for a day and had a moment to write this blog. On my cab ride from the airport, the driver had the radio on. There was a Taylor Swift song playing called “Out of the Woods”. I love the refrain:

Are we out of the woods yet?

Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet?
Good

On the plane ride west, I was reading Carol Dweck’s book “Mindset”. She determined that “ability” has two meanings, not one. “A fixed ability that needs to be proven, and a changeable ability that can be developed through learning”. It’s about a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. It’s a choice. My recommendation: choose a growth mindset.

How does this all tie to Taylor Swift? The song reminds me of a fixed mindset that needs to be proven.
